Foundation: As you can infer from Tool 9, what goes on in classrooms and school influences whether some students come to school and attend class. (Others simply go because they are expected to.) Much research demonstrates that students learn best when they are motivated by positive relationships with teachers and with peers, when they feel valued and respected, and when the instruction is not only interesting and connected to students’ experiences, but dynamic and engaging, with students expected to express themselves and justify their reasoning. Below, we include samples of the types of questions you might ask in a “homegrown” survey. (These samples are just the tip of the iceberg.)
